Health and Safety

Health and safety is central to everything we do at Nationwide Window Cleaning. The health and safety of our employees and everyone else affected by our activities is fundamental to the success of our business. It influences the way we think, the way we plan, the way we behave and most importantly the way we perform. All our Operations Managers and Directors have achieved IOSH or NEBOSH registration, which demonstrating our commitment to working safely.

Cleaning the windows of tall buildings is potentially very dangerous. Good practices are, therefore, critical to our business.

All new operatives receive their Health and Safety training before ever going on site. We deliver regular refresher training to all staff, and our managers and supervisors are either Institution of IOSH (Occupational Safety and Health) or NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) trained and qualified.

At Nationwide Window Cleaning we ensure that risk assessments and method statements are carried out before any work commences, client have access to these through Nationwide Window Cleaning on line software system. Our managers conduct regular safety audits to check that every operative complies with our safe working practices and quality standards.

We are very proud of our Health and Safety policies, training programs and impeccable record. Nothing that we do is so important that it cannot be done safely.


We understand that some of our operations may have an impact on the environment. We are committed to supporting the environment as well as helping to reduce any detrimental effects on it. Our greatest concerns are largely the same as those recognised by many of our clients, customers and peers:

  • The need for the efficient use of water
  • Emissions derived from running a commercial and company vehicle fleet
  • Costs and emissions associated with the use of electricity
  • Handling and disposing of the resulting waste from our

We have devised and initiated a series of measures to tackle these issues, namely:

  • Reducing water consumption is an important objective to Nationwide Window Cleaning. We strive to make efficiencies where possible e.g. water conservation. Working with clients who save rain water on site allows us to utilize this natural supply.
  • Our fleet of vehicles have start/stop technology and are equipped with state-of-the-art low emission technology.
  • Our schedules take in to account mileage travelled to ensure fuel efficiency and reduce mileage where possible.
  • We practice an efficient use of energy in our central head office by encouraging our employees to make small changes in their daily habits and so deliver big reductions in our electricity use and we recycle paper and other office supplies such as ink cartridges.

We aim to bring best practice that enables us to minimise our impact on the environment and prevent pollution and waste wherever possible.


Since the summer of 2013, staff at Nationwide Window Cleaning have been dressing down on a Friday and each making a donation to charity. By doing this the Company has raised significant sums of money for our nominated charities, which are; Race for Life, Children in Need and Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

At NWC we are keen to contribute to the local communities in which we operate. Specifically, we have a local recruitment policy which shapes our approach to selection of new staff. Our infrastructure is truly national, so wherever possible we use local and regional press to advertise for jobs for local people all over the UK.

For example, NWC has an annual charity abseil in Leeds, which encourages local people to come along and experience first hand what it is like to abseil down the side of a large building. Our staff give up their time on a weekend to organize, participate and manage the whole event, so that it is both enjoyable and safe.

At various times during the year, we offer work experience placements to students and young people to give them an understanding of a reallife work environment. These placements are of varying length but typically of a week to a month.

We are keen to work with schools to offer insight into the work environment and to offer help, advice and support from the management team. In this way we ensure we remain in touch with the local community. As a result, our staff genuinely feel that they are giving something back to the communities in which we work.

Providing training and development opportunities to our workforce is not simply a matter of getting more from our people but being able to challenge and stimulate them. With this in mind, we make sure that all employees in our business have opportunities to learn and grow.

Our Directors are NEBOSH Certificate (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) qualified. Managers & supervisors are IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) managing safely trained and our Window Cleaners have City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 certificate in cleaning and support service skills as a minimum.
